Ch.Munkhzul: “Elite audiences” are not people who have financial wealth but taste of classical art

Interview with MUNKHZUL Chuluunbat, General Director of Mongolian State Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet.

-We are congratulating you with the 50 years of Anniversary of Mongolian State Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet. 50 years are comparably short time as compared with European classical arts had seen development for hundreds of years. Could you tell us, what are the main accomplishments of your theater for these 50 years?
-We are proud of that Mongolia overcomes 500 years of world classical arts development in 50 years. I think, gest success, main achievements of our theater are first, wonderful repertory consisting of 53 operas and 51 ballets and world-well known professionals. Preparation of opera and ballet professionals of Mongolia started in 40th years oflast century and was ready to establishindividual theatre of opera and ballet in 60th of last century. That’s why Mongolian State Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet established in 1963.We’re having around 40 ballet performances and 40 opera performances and around 10 symphony concerts and its almost 100 performances in a year. We are very proud, that world No1 Baritone is Mongolian and working in our theater. Actually, 3 ballet dancers and more than 10 singers of our theater won grand and best prizes of international gest competitions.

-Active season of this year is ending. What success did you saw in this season?
-We have extended the session and made performances for tourist and last one was held on 28 June. The theatre has seen off the session with full of audiences. There were many foreign visitors. We do serve audiences around 16500-18000 in a year. This year our theater performed 94 plays and served 27500 people. This is much more that of last year’s statistics.

-Previous general directors of the theater were professional singers, composers and dancers. You are the first person who is not artist, but you have management background. What do you think, what can our audiences or your staff expect from you?
-I wasn’t born in musical or artistic family. But, thanks to my parents, I obtained good education, including musical education. From childhood I always loved music and theater and wrote articles and produced programs about classical arts and learned arts management. I don’t know, what people expecting from me, may be grand changes, different ideas. But I think people are expecting good development regarding our theater. I have many thoughts, ideas and plans. But at the moment, I would like to do measurable, realistic, optimistic and necessary steps, instead of huge ideas which will take more time and efforts. For example, we’re starting the renovation of the building of our theater after 15 years of its last renovation. Renovation will cover toilets of artists, air conditioner system of audience hall, inside and outside part of audience part, electricity system, camera system etc. I really would like to do quality renovation.Secondly, I discussedthe condition of salary loan of employees of our theater with the TDB officials and negotiated with lowest interest of loan for our staff. Also, now I am working on “housing of employees” and seeking the possibility to help the artists and staff of the theater to buy apartment with appropriate price. I just recently signed the contract with MCS Group to fund the project to protect and digitalize the musical notes and manuscripts of national ballets and operas. Now I’m working on proposals of production of ballet and opera for young audience under the age of 10 and national “brand production” for tourists. Opera and ballet are special genres which need in more attention and good support from government and people. Specially, social environment is essential criteria for our artists, regarding salary and other financial support. That’s why we requested Ministry officials to put our requests and assessments into the draft of new “Law on Culture”

-People say classical arts for elite people, not for all community. What can you do to make open classic arts for the grassroots?
-One should think who will be called elite. Of course, we know from history, people who have well living conditions and not working for a cup of tea want to have a pleasure of art performance. As my point of view, “elite audiences” are people who may understand and get pleasure from classic arts and can evaluate and value it, andit is not about the financial condition of people. There are not so many people, who can understand classic arts in any country. If we refer to numbers of population, we have many “elite audience” in our country. However, in order to increase numbers of people who can understand classic arts, we should make our theatre open to grassroots. Therefore, we have planned to extend activities towards to distribute information and knowledge and organize training and discussion and to take measure dedicated for art education of children.

-Visits of Ballet from New York and of representatives of Austrian musical world to your theatre held just month ago which gave a wonderful impression and pleasure to the audience. What activities will be further?
-We have good extension in our foreign relation. Since March of this year, we have worked in cooperation with many specialists, such as conductors, ballet-dancers, producers and musicians come from Russia, USA and Austria. We are going to work in cooperation with foreign specialists for the next season. We have many plans for example, about 20 famous dancers from Russian distinguished theatres will visit to our theatre and will show their performances in October of this year, and to organize a training together with Austrian choirmaster, to send our singers to Korea in November and to organize joint performance together with Austrian harpist,  and to have our singers’ visit to USA in February, 2014 and participate in “Pan-Asian Musical Festival” and to organize joint performance together with symphony orchestra of Germany in June, 2014 and many other.

-Mongolia is the only one country has theatre of ballet and opera in Asia. What activities will you have for the Asian audiences and tourists?
-May be Asian audiences have less interest and knowledge of classical arts than Europeans. But, most of tourists visited to Mongolia are come from Asia, including Korea and Japan.  Therefore, we considered cooperation with embassies of these countries and Mongolian companies dealing with tourism. Indeed, ballet is well developed in Japan and Korea as they are countries of Asia. I think first we may cooperate with their ballet companies. As regards opera, our country has more development than other countries of Asia. Therefore, we will investigate possibility to organize performances in other Asian countries.

-It sounds new about the social responsibility of theater since you appointed as a director. What did you mean under this understanding? What exactly you’ll do?
-Main purpose of our theater, as it is a gest state owned organization of performance arts, is to serve audience with good quality performances of opera and ballet. But, there are some audiences, who are left out of attention. That is why, we want to let those people to come to our theatre and feel the magic of classic arts and we call access to those people as “our social responsibility”. We will organize performances for to orphan children, disabled people, public organizations directly serving citizens, who and which has limited time and possibilityto see performances our theatre. Our marketing department is working on development of plan for next year. As you mentioned, we will consider foreign relation and social responsibility in our plan.
