INTRODUCTION TO ZANABAZAR’S CREATIONS

Mongolia’s first Bogd Undur Gegen, G. Zanabazar, was a master craftsman who made valuable contributions to Buddhist art worldwide. Today, his signature masterpieces are displayed and conserved in the museums of Ulaanbaatar. Not only were his Buddhist sculptures cold, plastered images brought to life, reviving the image of God in a strict sculpting technique, but they are groundbreaking in their seamless casting, not multiple pieces adjoined or welded, making the miraculous works of art one of a kind. International art experts and collectors focus on, research, and collect his work and signature masterpieces.

Undur Gegen created only a single representation of the Green Tara with great virtuosity. There’s even a Mongolian folk legend about her. The legend says the Green Tara was created in the image of G. Zanabazar’s dearest, cherished love, a 21 year old girl who was deprived of life with cruelty. The Green Tara, with its beautiful almond eyes, straight nose, baby plump cheeks, full lips, and lavish bust,  lacks clothing but not embellishment on her delicate, youthful body, but she is  never garish. Her elegant movements, like her signature gesture of holding a lotus flower, are graceful and distinct from the Dari Ekhs of Jagar and Tibet. The sculpture is a unique creation captivating the intellectual mind with its sensational full casting, with absolutely no seams or welding. Her timeless form and the depth of her humble smile is a reflection of the virtues of Mongolian women. This masterpiece is preserved at the Bogd Khan Palace Museum.

White Tara, the form of a pure, natural woman, sits with her right palm held outward, fingers stretched and gently resting on her right knee, with stems from a marsh rising around her from a diamond-shaped lotus throne. Although her face, form, hands, and fingers are tender and soft as those of a child, the refined beauty taking shape in her image  is represented through the flower blossoming on her left shoulder. The goddess, a classic image of pure and humble Mongolian girls having been embraced by only wind and nature, exceeds the limitations of artistic expression and is an important deity representing philosophies passed down through generations. This work of art is displayed at the Museum of Fine Arts, along with signature pieces by Zanabazar such as “Grandeur Gods” and “Holy Shrine”.

In the Yadmin Temple of Choijin Lama Temple Museum, also known as the sacred worship temple of mystic mantras, are the Twin Gods of mantra meditation. The sophisticated signature work of Undur Gegeen Zanabazar is the Demchiggarav God, or Supreme Amgalant Tsagaan. The delicately crafted Twin Gods symbolize modality, a disregard for lust, and the reside in the form of meditation. The work draws considerable attention away from other exhibits in the temple, but here you can also see the fine work of Zanabazar’s Ayush, Dorjsembe, and Bosoo Maidar.

Behold the signature masterpieces of one of Mongolia’s finest artists, G. Zanabazar, at the Museum of Fine Arts, Choijin Lama Temple Museum, and Bogd Khan Palace Museum.
